Not the generic stuff. The real stuff. Here's what I actually think you should look for — including the one question most couples forget to ask that matters more than anything else.
Choosing a wedding cake baker is one of those decisions that feels small until you realize how much it actually matters. Your cake is going to be in every photo. Your guests are going to eat it and remember it. And the experience of working with your baker — the communication, the trust, the creative process — is going to be part of your wedding story.
So let me tell you what I think you should actually look for. Not the generic stuff. The real stuff.
Look at Their Portfolio Honestly
Not just the best photos — all of them. Does the quality feel consistent? Do the cakes look like they were made by the same person, or does it feel like a mixed bag? You want to see a baker who has a clear aesthetic and executes it consistently.
Also — does their style match what you want? If you want something soft and romantic and their portfolio is full of bold, graphic designs, that's worth paying attention to.
Do They Actually Listen?
This is the one I feel most strongly about. In your first conversation with a baker, notice whether they're asking questions or just talking at you. A good baker wants to understand your vision before they start pitching ideas. They should be curious about you, your partner, your venue, your vibe.
If someone gives you a quote before they've asked you a single question about what you want, that's a red flag.
Ask About Delivery and Setup
This matters more than people realize. A beautiful cake that arrives damaged or late is a disaster. Ask specifically: do you personally deliver? Do you set up on-site? What's your backup plan if something goes wrong?
I personally deliver and set up every wedding cake I make. I arrive early, I set it up myself, and I don't leave until it looks exactly right. That's not standard — make sure you ask.
Northern Virginia Wedding Venues I Know Well
I've delivered cakes to venues all across Loudoun County and the surrounding area — barn venues along the Blue Ridge, estate properties in Middleburg, hotel ballrooms in Tysons, backyard celebrations in Ashburn. I know the roads, I know the timing, and I know how to get a tiered cake there in perfect condition.
